Learnings from Paradise ~ Meeting on August 25

This week we heard back from a few of our group members regarding a trip they took to Paradise, California. They were invited to join the community leaders behind their ongoing rebuild from the devastating 2018 Camp Fire. We are humbled to have their guidance and hope to implement the key learnings the team took from their experience.

Below is Julie O’Dwyer’s presentation on the trip:

Top Ten Things You Can Do Now to Prepare your Community Organization

  1. Like on the airplane: Put your oxygen mask on first! What is your personal preparation plan? Do you have a list of what you should have? https://www.ready.gov/build-a-kit
  2. Board and Staff Meeting Agenda under “New Business”: Disaster planning. Download an example Disaster Planning Process www.standardsforexcellenceinstitute.org
  3. Talk about what role your community program may need to play in the disaster.
  4. Join RV Recovers now: www.Roguevalley.recovers.org
  5. Assess your building. If it is built with unreinforced masonry, have a qualified engineer give you an assessment.
  6. What can fall over in your building? Fasten what you can to the walls.
  7. Can your staff get home or get to work or will downed bridges or overpasses stop traffic? Have a pair of walking shoes in the office or in your car.
  8. Are there emergency supplies in your office?
